   District Profile
 
Senapati district is one of the hill districts of Manipur state with a total geographical area of 3271 sq.km. covering about 14.65% of the total state geographical area. It is situated in between 24o30’N and 25o45’N latitude and longitude in between 93o30’E and 94o30’E. The district is bounded by Nagaland in the North, Ukhrul district of Manipur in the East, Imphal district in the South and Tamenglong district of Manipur in the West. The altitude of the district stretches from 720 to 4000 meter from MSL. It enjoys sub-tropical to temperate type of climate with three distinct seasons, i.e. summer, winter and monsoon. It is the smallest district in area as compared to other hill district of the state and has the highest population among the hill districts.
 
   
   Historical genesis
  Formerly Senapati district was known as North District of Manipur, the Head Quarter of the district was located at Karong, later it was renamed as Senapati district and the Head Quarter was shifted to Senapati as District Head Quarter.  
   
   Administrative Setup
  Senapati district is divided into 6(six) sub-divisions namely Mao-Maram, Paomata, Purul, Sadar Hill West, Saitu Gamphazol and Sadar Hill East (Kangpokpi). The details has been shown in the Table below.

   Rivers
  Senapati district is the sources of two major river system of the state. The longest river of the state which is known as Manipur/Imphal River originated from Polen Pat in Senapati district and flows through the valley districts and joins with Chindwin river in Myanmar. The Barak river which is the broadest river of Manipur originated from Paomata sub-division and flow through Tamenglong district and joint with tributaries of the Bramaputra river in Assam.  
   
   Physiographic features
  The district falls under humid sub-tropical climate to temperate type with temperature ranging from a minimum of 3.36oC to a max. of 34.14oC. The soil of the district can be broadly classified as mountainous or hill soil ranging from red loamy soil to sandy loam soil poor in phosphorus content lime and potash. The organic Carbon content ranges from 1.00 to 3.00%. The district receives an annual average rainfall of 1370mm.

   Demographic features/information
  Among the 5(five) hill district of Manipur, Senapati district has the highest population. It has 283621 human population of which 146548 and 137073 are male and female respectively with a population density of 87 person per sq.km. The total workers of the district are 71888 out of which 44766 are cultivator, 9531 are agril. labour and 17591 are non-agricultural worker. Tribal population accounts for 78.45% of the total population comprising of Naga & Kuki tribes. The literacy rate of the district is recorded to be 59.80 per cent.
